Teens Migrating to Twitter...for Privacy?

This means Twitter (and perhaps Tumblr) will be the next frontier for old people:

16% of youth from ages 12 to 17 used Twitter as of last July. Two years before, that same percentage was just 8%. Another survey conducted by the organization also showed that nearly one in five 18- to 29-year-olds have grown to using Twitter on a regular basis.

Is Longevity Research Inherently Immoral?

One part of the argument for longevity research. The anti-research argument is concerned that poor people will be disproportionately represented in human trials.

So, according to Agar, next come the experiments on hapless poor people, right? Hardly. As it turns out some rich people who are eager to extend their lives are already paying considerable sums to take a supplement, TA-65, which has been shown to lengthen telomeres in humans.

Technology Is "Almost Human," Children Say

This is really big. There’s a concept called the Uncanny Valley that says when robot appearance gets to point of human appearance, it creeps people out. This study may show that it’s only a matter of exposure to technology.

In the study, nearly two-thirds of the children took it for granted that robots would make excellent human-like friends, conceiving of their fictional robots as peers they can identify with. They even imagined robots would be socially successful because they were smart.

The children also imagined robots that were better versions of their parents and teachers and offered them limitless time and patience. Conversely, they envisioned robots as being machines that would take on boring tasks so the children have more time for interesting pursuits.

Google’s Cloud Robotics Could Threaten Jobs

Via The Fiscal Times:

Google’s approach also offers compatibility with Android. Robots will be able to take advantage of the “cloud-based” (in other words, online) features used in Android phones, as well as new cloud-based capabilities specifically for robots. In essence this means that much of the intelligence that powers the robots of the future may reside on huge server farms, rather than in the robot itself. Cheating Spreads Like Infections In Online Mulitplayer Games - Technology Review

Via Technology Review:

the new method is a kind of pre-crime detection rather like the movie Minority Report. That's a dangerous avenue to tread. The labelling of individuals as potential cheats itself has significant moral, philosophical and legal implications that will need to be teased apart and examined before it can be employed in the real or virtual worlds. Cheating Spreads Like Infections In Online Mulitplayer Games - Technology Review

Points:

  • Online game communities try to stamp out cheating to keep the experience true for gamers.
  • Analysis of online activity revealed that cheaters in online games tended to stick together.
  • The more a player associated with cheaters, the more likely that player would start cheating.
  • Cheaters self-isolated themselves from other gamers.

Ponder:

  • Maybe Mom and Dad were right: don’t run with the wrong crowd.
  • Is the influence bad behavior more likely to drag someone down than the influence of good behavior to pull someone up?

Practice:

  • Structure your social network to avoid that kind of behavior in all areas.
  • Purpose ahead of time to respond in specific ways when the temptation does come up.
